The primary purpose of the position is to evaluate and ensure garments pass all phases of the development and fit process including timely communication to all applicable stakeholders. Review, evaluate and correct patterns ensuring consistent fits. Conduct fit sessions and make fit recommendations that meet customer and Carhartt expectations.

Representative Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of prototype/development samples through all phases of the Development / Fit approval process ensuring clear communication of the desired outcome.  This includes development of specifications, evaluating garments, evaluating construction, measuring samples, assessing & correcting patterns, making patterns, conducting consumer laundering, leading cross functional fit sessions, evaluation of graded measurements, create detail sketches & diagrams of corrections.
  • Create detailed garment tech packs that include base size, graded specifications, tolerances, construction details, detail sketches, fit evaluation comments, and partner with cross functional teams with completion of BOM’s.
  • Create technical sketches including construction details, style details, and other detailed sketches to ensure the vendors execute to the vision.
  • Lead and/or participate in fit sessions, making appropriate recommendations for fit, balance, function and construction issues. Soliciting input from Cross Functional teams as needed.
  • Participate in Design/development meetings with cross-functional partners to meet all deadlines, raising issues to appropriate level for resolution in a timely manner.
  • Generate and maintain accurate product specification packages.
  • Create & maintain seasonal tracker documents that show what the status of a style is at any point in the Development/Fit process.
  • Work closely with Quality assurance to maintain consistency and accuracy of construction standards.
  • Develop base blocks by product: based on fabric & fit category working with Vendors to develop & finalize the block building consistency within the product offerings
  • Assist with new vendor start up and factory support. Travel to vendors to assist with execution of accurate development samples and support factories through communication of tech packs and sample requirements.
  • Identify inefficiencies in processes and taking the initiative to make recommendations for improvements.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Garment Tech packs are detailed, garments fit construction consistently meets Carhartt’s standards and guidelines. Adherence to timelines / on time deliveries.
  • The development process is managed and followed from tech pack to pre-production consistently and efficiently.
  • Prototype patterns will reflect desired fit, balance and function and meet established standards
  • Prototype & Production specifications (Spec, construction & Grade) will be detailed, accurate and have gone through all phases of the development process properly with timely follow up to our vendor partners internal and external.
  • Will ensure prototypes have gone through all phases of the development process with proper follow up with Cross Functional Teams & Vendor partners internal & external
  • Sales samples are on time per the Product Development timeline.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in apparel, textile or related discipline or equivalent experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years or more of Technical Design experience.
  • Excellent patternmaking, grading, draping skills and the ability to manipulate existing patterns.
  • Excellent garment fit and construction evaluation skills required.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in pattern making/alteration and grading practices to achieve desired fit for multiple product categories required.
  • Strong leadership and project management experience preferred.
  • Well-developed computer skills essential, including WebPDM or PLM application, Illustrator or other drawing application, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills essential.
  • Ability to work in and foster a team environment is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of construction standards and manufacturing methods.
  • Domestic & foreign development/production experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, time management, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to problem solve and make decisions.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills essential

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment; cubicle/office setting. Extended periods of time sitting, standing, typing on a computer is required.
  • Light lifting may be required. 15 LBS
  • Willing to work some weekends if necessary.
  • National and International travel required (up to 10-20%).
